Dóchas reacts to Budget 2027

Dóchas has recognised the Government’s decision to increase Official Development Assistance (ODA) in today’s budget, while warning that funding remains off track to meet our national commitment.

With over 240 million people in urgent need of assistance and 117 million displaced by escalating conflict, climate change, and hunger, overseas aid is a vital lifeline. At a time when several international governments are retreating from global funding, Ireland’s continued support sends a signal of solidarity.

However, Dóchas highlighted that today’s increase of €14 million falls short of the trajectory needed to fulfill the Programme for Government’s promise of reaching the UN target of 0.7% of Gross National Income (GNI).

Jane-Ann McKenna, CEO of Dóchas, said:

“At a time when so many countries are stepping back, it is encouraging to see Ireland stepping forward. Today’s budget increase of €14 million demonstrates that the Government understands the urgency of global crises.

However, ambition must match the scale of the need. As the Taoiseach stated at the UN General Assembly last month, escalating global crises do not lessen our responsibility to act. Our humanitarian values must be matched by dedicated resources. Today is a welcome step, but Ireland must accelerate its path toward the 0.7% target.”
