(1) Request for Volunteers who speak Arabic and/or French
Dóchas is commencing a translation project As part of the process, we require volunteers from our membership who speak Arabic and French to help proofread a number of documents over the next few weeks. Total time per language will be one hour. Please contact comms(at)dochas.ie with any interest.
(2) Charity Trustees Week: Safeguarding: What should a Trustee know? - 12 November
As part of Charity Trustees Week 2024, the Dóchas Safeguarding Working Group will host a webinar titled “Safeguarding: What Should a Trustee Know?” on Tuesday 12 November at 11 am.
This event aims to inform charity trustees and board members about safeguarding and how they can support the implementation of safeguarding measures and the development of a strong safeguarding culture. Speakers on the day include Feargal O’Connell, CEO of Self Help Africa; Moria Leydon, Assistant General Secretary of ASTI and Board Member of ActionAid Board; and Valerie Philpott, Safeguarding Advisor at Misean Cara and Chair of the Dóchas Safeguarding Working Group. (3) Call for Tender: Consultant to Conduct Analysis of Irish Climate Financing in 2025
Dóchas is seeking proposals from consultants who are interested in conducting an "Analysis of Irish Climate Financing in 2025: Challenges and Opportunities over the Years Ahead". The purpose of the consultancy is to take stock of Irish climate finance in terms of its quantified target; to analyse the quality, effectiveness and transparency of Irish climate finance; and to analyse Irish leadership on climate finance policies until now. The deliverable of this consultancy is a final report. We ask that interested parties submit a CV and short document outlining their approach to this tender to simon(at)dochas.ie. Find out more here. Upcoming Events & Conferences
(1) UCD: A survivor / victim-centred analysis of transitional justice in Liberia - 11 November
On 11 November, Kelsey Rhude will present work evaluating the Liberian National Palava Hut Programme (NPHP) for peace, justice, and reconciliation using a survivor/victim-centred analysis. The study is based on extensive qualitative data collected in Liberia and demonstrates that the NPHP is contributing to transformation of desires for retaliation, and of relationships within communities who participated in the programme. Ms Rhude recently completed her doctoral thesis at the Irish Centre for Human Rights in the University of Galway and is currently a research associate in UCD's School of Politics and International Relations. (2) IDEA: Global Citizenship Education Research Showcase Event - 25 November
IDEA and Ubuntu are thrilled to invite you to the second edition of our Global Citizenship Education (GCE) Research Showcase on Monday 25 November, 10.00am -12.30pm, online. This event is free of charge. The aim of this event is to showcase contemporary GCE research. You will be introduced to thought-provoking and engaging inputs and have an opportunity to reflect with fellow participants on the applicability of the concepts discussed to your GCE practice. For the purpose of this event, the term research will be taken in its broadest sense, encompassing academic research; action research; documented practice; documented learning; conceptual research articles; case studies etc. Speakers for this event are to be confirmed. (3) Irish Global Health Network: Multiple Events
Irish Aid Annual Professor Father Michael Kelly Lecture on HIV and AIDS - 28 November
The annual Irish Aid Professor Father Michael Kelly HIV Lecture is held every year to coincide with World AIDS Day. Every year, this event gives us an opportunity to come together as a community, to keep ourselves up-to-date in terms of the current priorities for HIV and AIDS and importantly to ensure that we keep HIV high on the agenda. This year, the event will be held on Thursday 28th November, from 16:30-19:00 Irish Time, at Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin. This year’s focus will be on the important theme of Remember and Commit. IGHNX 2025: Global Health Reimagined - 13 February
Welcome to the second installment of IGHNx the event that turns global health topics on their head, and challenges the way we think about common themes. Join us at our very own version of a TEDx event where global health professionals, innovators, and change-makers will gather to share insights and experiences to spark groundbreaking conversations in the global health field. (4) SADIE Network: The right to food, the reality of hunger: Food insecurity on the margins - 9 December
The SADIE Network are hosting a hybrid symposium on the 9th of December from 9am to 5pm. The symposium will be held in the Trinity Long Room Hub but can also be accessed online. This symposium will bring together international voices on food insecurity, including academics, practitioners and experts by experience. Focusing on persons and communities pushed to the margins by colonialism, ableism and other forms of systemic marginalisation, the symposium will highlight the disproportionate impact of food insecurity on those groups who find themselves in spaces of exclusion. (1) The Wheel: Leadership Academy Breakfast Club - 7 November
The Leadership Academy is delighted to present the next event of their Breakfast Club series on the topic of Leadership & Technology, taking place on Thursday 7 November from 10:00am to 11:30am. As technology and remote work embed in our lives now, the panel will discuss technology and answer some questions such as "How does technology effect leadership styles?" and "In what wasy has technology changed the way we lead?". To answer these, the Breakfast Club will welcome Sheena Horgan, Board Director and former CEO of Drinkaware and Psychological Society of Ireland, and Dr. Colin Hughes, Head of the Graduate Business School at TU Dublin. (2) IDEA: Workshop Series
Brave Spaces for Racial Justice - Navigating Power, Privilege and Decolonisation - 6 & 18 November
Following the overwhelmingly positive response from the workshop on Decolonising Justice at the IDEA annual conference in September 2024, we are delighted to welcome back the same trainers to offer a two- day interactive and in person workshop on promoting racial justice in our Global Citizenship Education work' on 06 November and 18 November, 10.30am-4pm in the IDEA offices, 6 Gardiner Row, Dublin 1. Led by facilitators Bronwyn April and Mdahyelya Bassi, this workshop will provide a deep dive into the intersections of racial equity, philanthropy, migration, and decolonisation, framed within both global and Irish contexts. Centre for Global Education and the DICE Project invite participation in an online seminar to share and debate the content of Issue 39 of Policy and Practice on the theme "Development Education Silences". It will be held on Tuesday, 29 November 2024 from 12.00 - 1.30pm. (3) Concern Worldwide: CADA Development Officer
The Development Officer will play an important role in strengthening and expanding the network of Aid and Development Agencies in Northern Ireland. This post, funded by a three-year grant, will focus on fostering collaboration, inspiring change, and influencing policy within the Coalition. CADA’s Strategic Plan 2024- identified 3 areas of focus: Supporting and Developing the Network, Inspiring Change and Influencing Policy. (4) GOAL: Food and Nutrition Security Advisor
The Food & Nutrition Security Advisor will contribute to the achievement of GOAL’s global strategy: From Crisis to Resilience, and is responsible for supporting GOAL’s global programme addressing food and nutrition insecurity using a systems approach. Migration Project Coordinator
This Coordinator role will have week to week ongoing responsibility for Migration projects. Reporting to the department manager, the Coordinator will ensure that all project activities are effectively planned, are actioned in a timely manner, and the expected results are achieved. The role will liaise with relevant internal colleagues and external stakeholder and, depending on the project scale, may supervise a number of staff. Programme Manager - Migration
This Programme Manager will be responsible for leading and managing significant programme areas within the Migration department. This will include leading with programme planning, managing implementation through to delivery and reporting, and engaging with relevant stakeholders, and ensuring the programme area is delivery to the highest standard and in line with organisational strategy. The role will join other programme managers and the Head of International & Migration as the overall management team of the Migration department.The role will, initially, be responsible for the ‘Gaza Minors’ programme (involving the accommodating and casework support for children relocated to by the Government of Ireland for medical treatment). The Centre for Humanitarian Action at University College Dublin is offering a fully funded doctoral scholarship. Proposals are welcome concerning any aspect of the intersection of governance and the fields of disaster risk reduction and/or climate adaptation. (1) IRLI: Latest Episode of the IRLI Podcast Available Now
The latest guest on IRLI’s podcast is Dr Seán Columb, who for over 10 years has been
investigating the illegal organ trade. He sits down with journalist and broadcaster Evelyn
McClafferty to discuss his work in the area. Dr Columb is a legal academic - a senior lecturer in law at the School of Law and Social Justice at Liverpool University. Since 2014, he has been doing research on the illegal organ trade, primarily in Egypt, and has spoken to over 40 people from countries including Sudan, South Sudan, and Eritrea. All of them were fleeing conflict or the legacy of conflict, and they sold an organ out of economic necessity. Find out more and listen here.

(1) ActionAid: ActionTalks Annual National Speech Writing Competition
ActionAid Ireland launched the ActionTalks, a speechwriting competition on important global themes open to young people from across the country aged between 14 and 18 years-old. The competition – now in its 11th year - is aimed at encouraging students to explore the underlying causes of both local and global injustices, giving them a platform to share their perspectives.There are three themes this year: The climate crisis, women’s leadership in emergencies, and the role of overseas aid and women’s rights organisations.
