Dóchas News

(1) Dóchas AGM 2025 - 8 May

Starting at 10am, the meeting will focus on statutory business, including elections to the Board of Dóchas and the presentation of our 2024 financial statements and budget for 2025. Members will also receive an update on highlights from 2024 and plans for 2025, consider an application for full membership and participate in a discussion on the future of ODA. Upcoming events and conferences

(1) UCDVO: UCDVO Film Series - 23 April

Hosted in the UCD Cinema the UCDVO Film Series welcomes the UCD community and guests to engage with five of the very best global justice documentaries from the year. Each screening is accompanied by a speaker and an opportunity for discussion. (2) IDEA: IDEA Annual Conference 2025 - 28 May

The Irish Development Education Association is inviting participants and IDEA members to register for their 2025 Annual Conference, ‘Reclaiming Ground for Hope, Alternatives, and Action. Find out more here.

(3) Comhlámh: Palestinian Short Films Festival - 10 April

(4) Comhlámh Justice for Palestine Member Group: ’Prisoners of the Occupation’ Theatre Production - 20-22 May

Comhlámh Justice for Palestine Member Group proudly presents the Irish premiere of Prisoners of the Occupation - a gripping and thought-provoking political theatre piece created in collaboration with Palestinian political prisoners. Don’t miss this powerful portrayal of resilience and resistance on stage, which shines a light on the human rights violations faced by Palestinian political prisoners and to raise money for the ADDAMEER Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association. (5) Irish Network for Education Worldwide & UNESCO: Irish Launch of 2024/25 Global Education Monitoring Report - 11 April

The Irish Network for Education Worldwide (INEW) and the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, are hosting the Irish Launch of the 2024/5 GEM Report on leadership in education. The event will take place on 11th April 2025, from 10:30am to 1:00pm, followed by a lunch, at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Refreshments will be served from 10:00am. The event is kindly supported by Irish Aid. Due to limited seating, early registration is highly recommended. Please confirm if you would like to attend to coordinator(a)inew.ie. The report will be officially launched in Ireland by Irish Aid and will feature a special address by the Department of Education, presentation of the report’s key findings by the GEM Report’s Director, Manos Antoninis, a response of a Youth Advocate from Plan International Ireland, and a panel discussion with national and international experts from IPPN, INTO, Concern Worldwide, IDEA, and Human Rights Watch sharing insights and lessons from the report. (6) DCU Institute for Climate and Society: Annual Conference - 29 April

Join us for our conference "Dispatches from a changing climate: Engaging society through activism, storytelling and the arts", taking place on Tuesday 29 April on the DCU Glasnevin Campus. The keynote speaker is Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, who will deliver a report to the UN General Assembly this autumn on the challenges faced by human rights defenders working in the context of climate change and a just transition. The conference will also feature a range of speakers from the arts, the media and academia, with a live performance by vocal quartet Landless to close the day. (7) Queering Peace and Security in Ireland:  A Drop in Chat with LGBT Ireland and Queer Peace Academics - 11 April

On 6th December 2024, a group of feminist and queer academics, along with key Irish peace practitioners, came together for a "Workshop on Queering the Women, Peace and Security Agenda." This event was co-hosted by Dr Gillian Wylie (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Jamie Hagen (University of Manchester), Dr Anupama Ranawana (Durham University), and Alexandra Richardson (Trinity College Dublin). From this, an outcome report from this event was developed, synthesising the findings from notetaker reports, to highlight recommendations to better-improve this UN gender strategy. To celebrate the creation of this outcome report, Dr Jamie Hagen and Alex Richardson are hosting a ‘drop in’ event for the launch of this report at Outhouse, a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ activism in Ireland. (1) IDEA: ‘Between Neutrality and Militarisation’ Webinar - 30 April

The Irish Development Education Association is receiving registration for their third webinar in the webinar series Exploring Contemporary Crises and Issues through Global Citizenship Education: Between Neutrality and Militarisation.Global tensions are rising, with increasing drumbeats of war and militarism. What does the future hold for Ireland’s role internationally? This third session will explore the topics of militarisation, neutrality, and peace education. How do we explore militarisation through this lens and encourage critical thinking in the face of political hostilities? Find out more here.

(2)  Carmichael: Carmichael & Davy- New Charities SORP, key changes and implications for Charities - 15 April

Carmichael and Davy Institutional Consulting are jointly hosting an information sharing webinar on the new Charities SORP and the consultation process. (7) The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Education Officer - 15 April

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade invites applications for the position of Education Officer to support Irish Aid’s work on global citizenship and development education. The post of Education Officer is open, on a secondment basis, to serving primary, post-primary and further education teachers/trainers as well as adult education officers, youth workers and Youth Reach co-ordinators working in further education colleges and adult and community education settings. The Education Officer will have responsibility for supporting global citizenship education policy including promotion of global citizenship education in the formal and non-formal education sectors. Calls for Tender

(1) IDEA: Call for Tender; Analysis of Data from 2024 - Code of Good Practice for Development Education in Ireland - 23 April

The Irish Development Education Association (IDEA) is seeking a researcher to analyse the data gathered during 2024 as part of the IDEA Code of Good Practice for Development Education (DE) in Ireland. The research will examine what the Code data represents about Development Education practice in Ireland including strengths, gaps, innovation, and how this data can help articulate the impact of DE in Ireland. The research will culminate in a report reflecting insights and observations by the researcher, findings on the impact of the DE sector in Ireland, and potential areas for future strategic development of the Code. Courses and Training

(1) Maynooth University:  Post-graduate programmes at MU Department of International Development - 30 June

Join us at the Department of International Development, Maynooth University, on our PG and MA programmes, which start in September 2025 (full- or part-time). These include our PG Cert.in Global Citizenship Education, MA in International Development, and our MA in International Peacebuilding, Security and Development Practice. Through them, participants will critically engage with important contemporary issues and enhance their understanding, knowledge and skills to make a positive difference in the lives of others at personal, local and global levels. (2) University College Dublin: Module on Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies at UCD Centre for Humanitarian Action - 14 April- 16 May

Limited number of spaces are available for practitioners and/or early career researchers interesting in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in disparate humanitarian contexts. This full-time, mostly in-person module will run from 14th April to 16th May 2025 on UCD’s Belfield campus in Dublin, Ireland. Upon successful completion of the module, participants will receive a statement of results from UCD as well as a personalised letter of reference confirming the participant’s achievements on the course. (3) University College Dublin: Micro-credentials Online module on Ethical Dilemmas in Humanitarian Negotiation and Mediation at UCD Centre for Humanitarian Action - 16 June- 4 July

This module is designed to serve as a safe learning space for participants to confront and work through ethical dilemmas that face humanitarian practitioners on a daily basis while negotiating for access or offering informal mediation. The curriculum has been developed with input from sectoral leaders such as PRIO, CCHN and Glencree. The course is based on Universal Design for Learning principles and follows a Problem-Based Learning pedagogical approach. The module will be delivered through a series of live, interactive online workshops with experts complemented by bespoke recorded lectures, journal articles and text-based scenario games based on real-life case studies. (1) Irish Rule of Law International: Horsehair Wigs - When Big Tech Goes Unchecked

In the latest episode of Horsehair Wigs by Irish Rule of Law International, journalist Evelyn McClafferty speaks with Alia Al Ghussain from Amnesty Tech about the dangers of unchecked Big Tech. They explore how platforms like Meta, Google, and TikTok use engagement-driven algorithms that threaten privacy, spread disinformation, and violate human rights. Alia criticises Meta’s surveillance-based model and its recent halt to fact-checking in the US, calling it “a dangerous step backward.” She also highlights Meta’s role in violence in Myanmar and Ethiopia. “This is about people’s lives,” she says.
