Emergency Briefing on Sudan
On Monday 9th September, Dóchas held an emergency briefing on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
The purpose of the briefing is to raise awareness about the devastating situation in Sudan, and to do a united call to action from the development and humanitarian sector. We called for:
- The Irish Government to use its voice at the UNGA; EU and other political fora to mobilise political action towards protection of civilians and ending hostilities.
- The Irish Government to take action in Sudan – to increase funding
We aim to connect the humanitarian situation in Sudan with Ireland’s ODA and the upcoming budget – why we need to do more.
Mary Robinson, Chair of the Elders and former President, will made the keynote statement. Leading representatives of Concern Worldwide, GOAL, Trócaire and World Vision Ireland will also describe the situation in Sudan, and the urgent need for greater assistance.
Sudan is facing a catastrophe on a scale not seen since the Darfur crisis in the early 2000s. A famine in North Darfur is the first official declaration of famine for many years, and the crisis is thought to be spreading throughout the country.
We must raise our voice to call for peace, protection and access for humanitarian assistance at the highest levels, including at the UN General Assembly.
There is no time to lose. Over 500 days of relentless conflict have devastated the country and created the largest humanitarian catastrophe in the world.
