"It was great to see Irish MEPs engaged in constructive dialogue on critical issues of funding, humanitarian needs, and the way forward post COP28." - Jane-Ann McKenna

Dóchas, the Irish Network of Development and Humanitarian NGOs, today hosted a roundtable meeting with three Irish Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and key humanitarian and development organisations here in Ireland.

Barry Andrews, Frances Fitzgerald, and Ciaran Cuffe reflected on the changing political landscape in Europe and the global impact of international armed conflicts, including those in Gaza, the Middle East, and Sudan; escalating humanitarian needs and budgets. The need for an immiediate ceasefire in Gaza was agreed amongst all of those present.

The three MEPs also  discussed the outcomes of COP28 and the European Union's role in combating climate change. The conversation focused on policies and initiatives to drive sustainable practices, underlining the urgency of coordinated global efforts to mitigate environmental threats.

Speaking after the meeting CEO of Dóchas, Jane-Ann McKenna commented

“It was great to see Irish MEPs engaged in constructive dialogue on critical issues of funding, humanitarian needs, and the way forward post COP28. The European elections are a key opportunity to put the reduction of global inequalities on the agenda of the renewed EU institutions.  We need to put marginalised people at the centre of policy making on climate, human rights, gender equality, social justice and inclusion. Sufficient and transparent funding for sustainable development is critical to ensure the EU’s external action contributes to the 2030 agenda and the reduction of global inequalities.

The roundtable also facilitated discussions on the upcoming European Elections, with MEPs sharing their outlook on the potential impact on the European Parliament and the broader European Union.

Dóchas, through this initiative, continues to foster collaboration and dialogue between Irish NGOs and MEPs. The meeting concluded with a commitment to ongoing engagement, ensuring that the shared perspectives translate into concrete actions and policies that positively impact both Ireland and the broader European community.
